हिमाचल प्रदेश बोर्ड ऑफ स्कूल एजुकेशन, धर्मशाला 1969 में अस्तित्व में आया, 1968 में हिमाचल प्रदेश अधिनियम संख्या 14 के अनुसार शिमला में हेड-क्वार्टर बाद में जनवरी 1983 में धर्मशाला में स्थानांतरित हो गया। बोर्ड ने 34 कर्मचारियों के साथ शुरू किया था बाद में इसे बढ़ाकर 438 कर दिया गया। शिक्षा बोर्ड ने पाठ्यक्रम में सूचीबद्ध पाठ्यक्रमों के आधार पर परीक्षा आयोजित करने के अलावा हिमाचल प्रदेश में स्कूल शिक्षा के लिए पाठ्यक्रम और निर्देशों की पाठ्य पुस्तकें निर्धारित कीं।
